Severe Dysphagia and Meal time management
Enteral feeding, also known as enteral nutrition, is the process of ingesting
a nutritionally complete liquid straight into the gastrointestinal tract, which
includes the mouth, esophagus, stomach, and intestines.
Enteral feeding is required when a person is unable to consume enough
food to maintain their health, either because to a lack of appetite or a
physical restriction (such as injury, illness or disability). our specialized staff
are trained in enteral feeding and tube management. We will work closely
with you and your healthcare team to deliver your nutrition plan in the
comfort and privacy of your home. At Wellwish Care Services, our
experienced staff can support you with enteral feeding and management.
Mealtime management plans may include recommendations to:
- Ensure a person’s safe positioning during meals, improve the sitting and positioning supports.
- Change the texture of food to make it simpler to chew and swallow.
- Offer specific mealtime assistance strategies, such as any reassurances on a safe rate of eating or a safe serving size for each mouthful.
- Coughing or choking should be attended immediately, and hazards should be watched while a person is eating or drinking.
- Use feeding equipment, such as assistive technology like spoons, plates, cups, and straws, for people with severe dysphagia; and tube feeding equipment for people who need tube feeding because they have severe or profound difficulties swallowing.
At Wellwish Care Services, we have experienced staff who can support
participants with dysphagia to have meal time management plan written by
health care professionals.
